Things I Learned on Retreat on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Rug Hooking Retreat at the Heritage Inn

When I was in college, I belonged to the Newman Center group on campus.  The priest who was the moderator would take us on a spiritual retreat to a monastery outside of Elmira, NY.  My time there made a big impression on me. I loved the fact that we were getting away from campus.  I would catch up on homework, get up early (5 am!) to hear morning vespers, take long walks on the farm and explore the monastery.  It would center me.

That's why when I heard that Sauder Village offered ...

The Start of a Design on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

 I've had a week.

In typical manner, just when I've thought, I've created some boundaries with work, nope...it comes roaring back in.  But honestly, that's how life is.  You try to compartmentalize different aspects but it's not unusual for the boundaries to get crossed and some compartments to get bigger than others.  Luckily for me, I actually like my job so I don't mind giving a bit more energy than normal this week.  As long as it's the exception, not the rule.

I did finally carve out a little creative energy to ...

My First Hook-in on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

The calm before the storm

After going through the Covid plague of 2020, I made myself one promise...I would make sure I wasn't blowing off chances to socialize just because it seemed like "too much bother".  What that awful time made me realize was not to take socializing with my community for granted.  To that end, I took a leap of faith and went to my first Hook-in.

It all started with me seeing a Facebook post on a rug hookers guild page for their Hooktoberfest 2025 Hook-in.  After a guild member said it was open to the ...

Another Journal on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Is anybody out there just a glutton for cool stationary supplies?  Maybe it's because it's back to school time and the shelves are full of the coolest ones.  Or maybe it's because Cindi Gay has a whole series of lessons about journaling, but it got me in the mood to give journaling another try.

I have had several failed attempts.  Once I set one up for quilting.  Barely used it. I mean really, blogging about my quilting journey was plenty,   I did have pretty good success with the The Happy Planner series, mostly because it was a ...

Let's Talk Gatekeeping on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Ain't THAT the truth!

It's an odd place to be.. .a 35 year veteran of one craft .... quilting and a rank amateur of another... rug hooking.  After doing something for 30 years, you get to know most of the answers.  Diving in deep on rug hooking, the more I know, the more I realize I don't know.  Luckily, I've found a circle of ladies that are happy to share their opinions on things (and let me tell you, rug hookers are strong in their opinions).  One of my favorite 90 minutes of the week is the ...

Rug Hooking, Placemats and A Blast from the Past from The Cozy Quilter

I'm happy to report that my rug hooking is completely done!  Right now, it is pinned to my design wall but I will be hanging it on the wall in my sewing room soon.  Such a nice reminder of our trip to Newfoundland in 2023.

I was cleaning out a box in my fabric storage area and found the bag I made in Grade 7 Home Ec class.  In those days, the girls went to Home Ec and the boys went to Shop Class. All the girls made this bag...the outside is denim which the teacher had made ...

A Little Yellow Goes a Long Way on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Thank you all for so enthusiastically joining the We Do Not Care Club, Quilter's Edition.  I'm making a list for the next meeting.  Feel free to email me any additions you would like to make.

It's been a busy few weeks with my deep dive into rug hooking continuing.  I managed to finish the little flower project:

Hooked Wool

I'm all happy with this.  The wool was super suspect, but it taught me that really you can hook anything that will make loops.  Also, it solidifies in my mind ...

Placemats, HST's and the Hooking is Done! from The Cozy Quilter

I went to the guild sewing day this week and worked on my pitcher plant rug hooking project the whole time.  I managed to finish all of the hooking!  The first picture below was after I steamed it and the second picture was taken before steaming.  It really makes a difference, making it look much smoother afterwards!

I have started the wool edging but forget how to turn the corner and will have to consult with one of my hooking friends on how to do this.  The wool for the edging is a dark purple, even though it looks black ...

A Little Flower on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

As I hook my way through the grapes, I've been watching video lessons at Cindi Gray's "Rug Hooking Journey".  One of the chapters was this Little Flower pattern.  Cindi designed this little project for those who wanted to do more than just a square as their first project.  Originally, I skipped it - since I'm kinda of a "go big or go home" type of girl.  Now though, it looked like a nice palette cleanser to the grapes.

Oh this looked fun! First, I pulled out the sampler pack of backings I had ...

Starting a New Quilt from The Cozy Quilter

I signed up for a subscription to The Thread House Academy this year.  It is a series of online classes, one per month, led by Lynne Goldsworthy, Karen Lewis and Jo Avery.  One of the projects is a modern sampler quilt with three types of blocks released every four months.  The first three blocks were released at the beginning of August so I have pulled my fabrics--navy, aqua, and magenta prints and a light gray on white print for the background.  Everything came from my stash.  Here are my first two "blocks"--this is not a traditional 12.5" block ...

Grapes on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Okay, I'm not one to complain, but who ever thought putting 4 values of wool strips in one little thumb print size circle sounded like a fun, needs to take a long look at their definition of fun!  I spent my rug hooking time this week doing gradated grapes.  In 4 different gradations.  In two different purples.  Not only is it a lot of work trying to get your loops somewhat smooth in little circles but also it's a lot of, "so where is the light source for this grape?  Is that dark enough?  Is this one of ...

On a Roll from The Cozy Quilter

I have been in the mood to finish some quilts and so I have another finished quilt to show this week.  My yellow and green potato chip quilt is done. I'm calling it "Sunny Day". The striped binding was in my stash.  This quilt will be donated to my MIL's nursing home to be raffled off as a fundraiser. (Another quilt is quilted and will be bound shortly--it is a gift so no pictures yet)

I spent quite a bit of time rug hooking this week and made great progress on my project.  Lots of blue still  and ...

Walking Foot Quilting from The Cozy Quilter

I finished off the quilting and binding of the hollow 9 patch baby quilt earlier this week and got to work on quilting my yellow and green potato chip quilt.  I am using 28 wt green thread on top and white 50 wt thread in the bobbin. This is a bigger quilt so it is taking longer to quilt...more material to manage as I quilt. I will work on this again soon--I'm hoping to have it done to show on next week's blog post.  This is a donation quilt.

And here is the big TaDa!  The hollow ...

Onto Autumn Fruit on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Shirley, hooked by Kyoko Okamura, 40" by 37"

So, I'm onto my 2nd big project- Autumn Fruit designed by Pearl McGown & Jane McGown Flynn.  I'm still pretty shocked that I got this lovely pattern on linen with all the wool kitted out and class instructions all for $20 on eBay.  The more I looked at the project, the more I realized what an amazing deal it was.  Not to mention, it's a perfect 2nd project.  First it will teach me to follow a pattern and also shows me how to gradate the pattern to give it depth ...

A Finish - Rug #1 on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

RUG DONE! And yes, my first real rug hook in the books.  Now when I say "done", I mean done hooking.  Hopefully, I'll get the edges finished up soon enough.  But to tell you the truth, there are so many ways to finish them, I haven't figured out which one I'm going to do yet.

That all said, I thought I would continue on with my habit of doing a self critique when I finish project.

Rug Hooking, Knitting and a RSC Baby Quilt in Progress from The Cozy Quilter

After making 6 purple hollow nine patch blocks last week, I took out the bag of blocks that I have made so far this year and discovered that I had enough to make a baby quilt. I took them to the guild sewing day this week and laid them out on the design wall as shown above.  I sewed them together and  today, pin basted it and started the quilting--diagonal lines in both directions through each square.

I'm using 28wt white thread in the top and 50 wt white in the bobbin.  The backing was in my stash.

Yellow and Green, and some Purple too. from The Cozy Quilter

Purple is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge colour this month. I was not sure if I had enough 2.5" squares to make six blocks--my purple stash is sparse, but I managed to get my blocks done without getting a friend to donate some scraps to my project.  I have 48 blocks made so far--this might be enough. I will have to lay them out and see how they look.

My sewing time this week has been spent working on the yellow and green potato chip quilt.  This quilt will be donated to the nursing home where my MIL lives for ...

Home from the Cottage, again! from The Cozy Quilter

My husband and I, our daughter and Finn spent the last week at a cottage.  One week sure does go by fast, but we managed to fill our days with reading, sitting on the dock, rughooking, knitting (me),  crocheting and cross stitch(my daughter).  We went to a farmers market and into town to do some shopping one day but just spent the rest of the time relaxing at the cottage.

Finn loved napping in a chair on the screened in porch.  As you can see, I did a fair bit of hooking on my pitcher plant picture.

I finished ...

Choosing What's Next on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

This week's progress

Wool with the Auction
The nice thing about taking up a second creative journey this late in life is that I actually learned something the first time.  The biggest thing I learned from my beginning quilt days, was "Don't bite off more than you can chew." That's why when I designed my first piece, I picked simple shapes in a manageable size but with enough interest that I wouldn't go batty.  I won't lie.  I thought I would pick "this whole make a loop thing" faster than I did but finally it ...
